Abstract


Objectives: The objective of this study is to confirm an effect of decrease in halitosis, when dental hygiene
items using Mastic solution which use has been increasing recently, apply to halitosis patient,

Methods: Authors conducted the experiment of the reaction of volatile compound and Mastic solution and of the
clinical trials on 20 grown men to measure the halitosis degree of before and after using 0.1% Mastic gargle solution.

Results: The result of the experiments in laboratory shows that volatile sulfur compound doesn¡¯t react on Mastic solution. It has been found that the occurrence of halitosis measured by the Oralchroma was H2S 26.8 ppb, methyl mercarptan 27.3 ppb, dimethyl sulfide 38.8 ppb usually, and 10.7 ppb(p=0.040), 8.9 ppb(p=0.043), 23.3 ppb(p=0.070) after brushing, which shows that all the figures were lowered. It has been found that the occurrence of halitosis measured by the BB Checker was 27.8 BBV inside the mouth, 30.4 BBV expiration, and 19.5 BBV(p=0.037), 21.9 BBV(p=0.016) after brushing, which shows that all the figures were lowered to a similar degree.

Conclusion: This experiment indicates that the use of Mastic gargle solution helps the decrease in halitosis and
that the cause of decrease is not because of the reaction of volatile compound and Mastic solution. It was assumed that the main factor of the decrease in halitosis is the making effect of Mastic oil and the control of anaerobes.
